When you are just getting started in your business, you have
tremendous optimism and a can-do attitude. It is tempting to believe
that your programs and products are 'life-transforming' and a
'can't-do-without'.
I hate to tell you but this is so not true and if you don't believe this yet you eventually will.
If you are being everything to everybody you are spreading yourself thin and diluting your marketing efforts. It becomes unclear as to what your specialty is and eventually you are attracting nobody to do business with.
A business without clients does not last too long and unless you are sitting on abundant cash reserves it is imperative that you close sales with prospects and keep the business alive and thriving.
A successful entrepreneur knows the difference between an ideal and a non-ideal client. This information dictates the marketing and positioning of her brand so that her business stands out even in a crowded marketplace.
So how do you define an ideal client?
This is someone who:
• Has a history of investing in products and services similar to what you offer
• Will not question your fees or try to negotiate and will do relatively anything to work with you
• Will refer other clients to your business
• Is found in groups and networks that have more like him/her congregating in large numbers
• Someone you love working with
• Gets the best results working with you
• Is in alignment with what you offer
Now we've all been desperate at some point in our lives to make a quick buck or two and have agreed to work with anybody and everybody; therefore putting up with their drama, being poorly paid for our work and resulting in energy drain on our end.
If this is your situation, you want to honor your existing agreements and complete any outstanding work. After you're done make a conscious effort of working with ideal clients to ensure business longevity and your happiness!
My coach's request:
Study all your former clients that you have worked with and answer true or false to statements defining an ideal client above. If 90% or more of your answers are 'true' then the good news is you already are working with people you love to do business with.
If you find yourself answering 'false' more often, don't lose heart and focus your marketing efforts to attract ideal clients so that you can enjoy more prosperity in your business.
