As a kid, did you ever freak out after swallowing watermelon seeds while chewing on the delicious fruit? Guess what: you are not alone! But, as we grow up, the hoax surrounding intake of watermelon seeds seemed to fade away.
All childhood memories aside, getting a mouthful of seeds while you relish a bite of watermelon is a total buzzkill. However, there’s so much more to this juicy fruit and its seeds than what meets the eye.
As much as we value the dietary fibers and other nutrients of watermelons, especially during sunny days, its seeds are super-rich sources of several nutrients. Not only watermelon seeds (roasted and sprouted, of course!) are tasty and healthy; they also give a perfect boost of nutritional goodness that our body needs. A research report published by the International Journal of Science and Research (IJSR) claims, “Several studies have shown that seeds of Cucurbitaceae species (the plant family to which watermelon belongs) are potential sources of nutrients such as protein, minerals and lipids as well as ingredients for native medicine.”
