Gareth Bale made his first appearance following his world record-breaking move to Real Madrid. But that was all Wales had to smile about after the Cardiff City Stadium crowd were lifted off their seats just once to laud one of their own.
Although Bale clearly played within himself after his 58th-minute introduction, it looked as if neither the foot nor the groin strain which have curtailed his preparations so far will affect his expected debut for Real Madrid this weekend.
He did more in the final half-hour to trouble Serbia keeper Vladimir Stojkovic than the rest of his team-mates put together as Wales were comprehensively outplayed.
