Gareth Bale's family joined him on stage at the Santiago Bernabeu (top) as he was officially unveiled by Real Madrid in front of thousands of joyous fans (bottom right). Bale's childhood sweetheart Emma Rhys Jones (right), who met the footballer when he was a teenager at high school (bottom left), seems to have had a makeover in readiness for the relentlessly intense scrutiny of the 'Madridistas'. It is to her that Bale dedicates each goal by making a heart shape with his hands. In Britain the couple stayed out of the limelight and christened themselves Gavin and Stacey after the long-distance TV couple because Emma spends more time in Wales than in Bale's mansion in Chigwell, Essex.
